[Online] Motl the Cantor's Son by Sholem Aleichem. One of the founding fathers of modern Yiddish literature, Aleichem is known for creating one of the most celebrated characters in all Jewish fiction — Tevye — who would later become the main character in the musical Fiddler on the Roof. In his final novel, Aleichem tells the story of Motl, a spirited and mischievous nine-year-old who accompanies his family on a journey from their Russian shtetl (village) to New York. The boy's comical, poignant, and clear-eyed observations capture the struggles, hopes, and triumphs of Jewish immigrants to America at the turn of the 20th century.Vernon Area Public Library
