1927 Hollywood’s biggest romantic silent film duo, Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lena Lamont must reinvent themselves as modern “talking” movie stars in this classic musical. When their rival studio scores a megahit with Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, Don’s friend, the musician Cosmo (Donald O’Connor), transforms the period romance into a musical. The only trouble is, Lena can’t sing! Hilarity ensues as the stars try to adapt to their new speaking roles and ultimately Don’s crush, Kathy Seldan (Debbie Reynolds), is brought in to secretly dub Lena’s lines and songs. Lena “can’t stand ‘em” and nearly ruins their plans until the tables are turned at the final curtain. 1952. Directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly.Vernon Area Public Library District
